Investment Management Decisions

Large Healthcare Provider

Queensland

2013 - 2014

THE BUSINESS PROBLEM

Our client, a large Healthcare Provider, recognised that it had deficiencies in its investment management decision making. It retained the services of WDScott to discover:

  1. Where the money was being spent;
  2. Whether it was in the right places;
  3. Where the major project risks existed and finally;
  4. A view of what investments it had committed to.

OUR ROLE

WDScott developed three core workstreams:

Project 1: Financial Modelling project: WDScott produced a detailed cost analysis framework covering the entire business. This identified significant deviations in spend from plan and identified target areas for cost reduction. An internal team was appointed to lead the subsequent benefits realisation phase.

Project 2: BI proof of concept: WDScott supported the development of a suite of business intelligence visualisations to answer key business performance questions posed by the senior executive team. This helped identify significant project overspend/overruns, a lack of PPM maturity and also misalignment of investment activity versus their strategic priorities.

Project 3: Portfolio Office design and implementation: Following the successful BI proof of concept phase WDScott proposed a central Portfolio Office to support effective investment management decision making. The design has been accepted by the leadership team and WDScott are currently performing key roles in the new team including leading the development of a BI decision support capability.

OUTCOME

The financial modelling exercise identified many anomalies and duplications of spend. These have been handed over to an internal team to drive cost reductions.

The BI proof of concept was the first time our client had a view of its investment management portfolio. Many large, over budget projects have come under intense scrutiny and a number have already been closed down.

Another outcome of the BI proof of concept was the necessity for setting up a Portfolio Office to support effective investment management decision making across the business. This will help drive standardisation and consistency in investment decisions across all investment classes and in the future providing a sophisticated means of balancing the portfolio.
